Distributed, high-resolution modelling of critical source areas for erosion and phosphorus losses

چکیده
Phosphorus losses from arable land need to be reduced to prevent eutrophication of surrounding waters. Owing to the high spatial variability of P losses, cost-effective countermeasures need to target parts of the catchment that are most susceptible to P losses. Field surveys identified critical source areas for overland flow and erosion amounting to only 0.4-2.6 % of total arable land in four different catchments in southern Sweden. Distributed modelling using high-resolution digital elevation data identified 72-96 % of these observed erosion and overland flow features. The modelling results were also successfully used to predict occurrence of overland flow and rill and gully erosion in a catchment in central Sweden. Such exact high-resolution modelling allows for accurate placement of planned countermeasures. However, current legislative and environmental subsidy programmes need to change their approach from income-loss compensation to rewarding high cost effectiveness of implemented countermeasures.

Targeting critical source areas for phosphorus losses: Evaluation with soil testing, farmers’ assessment and modelling
Diffuse phosphorus (P) losses from arable land need to be reduced in a cost-efficient way, taking into account their temporal and spatial variability. This study, based on 16 farms across southern Sweden, examined possibilities for identifying critical source areas for P losses based on the combined results of high-resolution erosion modelling, independent risk assessments by farmers, soil surv...
متن کاملEffect of soil erosion on available phosphorus losses in a Hyrcanian watershed
One of the most important main environmental problems is soil erosion and its affects. Eutrophication, low oxygen levels and `high nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) concentrations in reservoirs, channel and other water courses, is a common water pollution feature. Phosphorus (P) is one of the major plant nutrients and also the major nutrients controlling eutrophication of surface water. The ai...
متن کاملRiparian land-use impacts on stream and gully bank soil and phosphorus losses with an emphasis on grazing practices
The tall-grass prairies, wetlands and forests that dominated the Iowa landscape have been replaced by annual row-crops and grass pastures that occupy more than 90 % of the landscape today. Because of these changes water reaches the streams and gullies much faster and has led to incised streams and an extensive growth of gully networks. Stream and gully banks are major contributors of the nonpoi...
متن کاملIdentifying dissolved phosphorus source areas and predicting transport from an urban watershed using distributed hydrologic modeling
[1] A reduction in surface water quality in urban watersheds due to nonpoint source phosphorus (P) loading has prompted municipalities to consider management practices to reduce P loss from landscapes. However, locating P source areas can be time consuming and expensive. Use of distributed models allows delineation of P source areas and focused management strategies. Using the spatially distrib...
متن کاملIdentification of critical sediment source areas across the Gharesou watershed, Northeastern Iran, using hydrological modeling
In this study, the process-based watershed model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), was used for simulating hydrology and sediment transport in the Gharesou watershed and for identifying critical areas of soil erosion and water pollution. After model calibration and uncertainty analysis using SUFI-2 (Sequential Uncertainty Fitting, ver. 2) method, the outputs of the calibrated model were u...
